Gas Station Owner Arrested After Reportedly Shooting at Contractor

PALESTINE, TX. –  The gas station owner arrested after reportedly shooting, causing a disturbance on Tuesday night.

Officers from the Palestine Police Department responded to the Valero convenience store at 3001 West Oak around 7 p.m. following multiple reports that gunshots were heard.

On arrival, they spoke to the victim, 38-year-old Houston resident Syed Khaliq. Khaliq was contracted to carry out repairs on the station’s fuel pump. He told police there was a dispute between him and the owner over the payment of fees for the repairs.

The contractor said the gas station owner, who was later identified as 55-year-old Atta Hussain, became angry and went inside the store. He allegedly returned with a handgun and fired multiple shots at the victim and his car. Police said the contractor did not suffer any injuries.

After interviewing witnesses and reviewing security footage, police arrested Hussain and charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Officers recovered a 9mm handgun which they believe was used in the shooting incident. Hussain was taken to the Anderson County Jail.

Aggravated assault is usually a second-degree felony and it is punishable by 2 to 20 years in the state penitentiary. If found guilty, the accused can also face a fine of up to $10,000.
